A river near a Siberian industrial center, the Daldykan River, which passes near the Arctic City of Norilsk has mysteriously turned the color of blood, causing panic among locals and tourists alike. The said river turned into a violent red color, with doomsday believers claiming that the transfomation is the work of God.

Could this be a sign of our coming doom? In Exodus 7:17–18, it’s written: “With the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will be changed into blood. The fish in the Nile will die, and the river will stink and the Egyptians will not be able to drink its water.”

Apparently not. Norilsk is a big industrial city, known as one of the most polluted on earth. The city is built around several metal factories, most belonging to Norilsk Nickel. It’s speculated that the river turned a vibrant red due to the chemical runoff from the factories.

There's a lot that goes into nickel refining, and a lot that comes out in the form of waste. We don't know for sure what is leaking into the Daldykan River.

Oxidized iron contained in the waste is suspected to be the culprit of the blood-looking water. “That’s a very typical color for a mine waste,” said David Chambers, mining expert and president of the Center for Science in Public Participation.
