After a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked New Zealand, three cows have been stranded in a small elevated island. But media said on Tuesday that the three cows had been led to safety by a team of rescuers.
The cows' owner led them to safety by creating a passageway once the area was deemed stable from landslides.
According to farmer Derrick Millton: “It was a difficult exercise.”
“We dug a path for them, and once they realized what was happening they meandered their way across to safety.”
"They desperately needed water...and I think one or two had lost calves in the earthquake so they were a bit distressed."
The farmer also said that the cows were part of a group of 14 he rescued.
The cows’ plight made international headlines after a helicopter captured footage of the two adults and a calf perched atop a small piece of land. The rest of the field the cows were standing on collapsed in landslides during the tremor.
