Despite super typhoon Lawin's destruction, it had only claimed 4 lives and injured 11 people whereas typhoon 'Yolanda' killed over 6,500 with 1,500 missing and thousands more harmed. Thus, despite being equally powerful and destructive, super typhoon Lawin did not gain the same level of international attention than typhoon Yolanda.
Bashers slammed President Duterte after no foreign aid arrived for 'Lawin' victims. Detractors attribute this to his 'foul mouth.' The locals are also wondering why the other countries are not helping out when ‘Lawin’ was touted to be more dangerous and more destructive than ‘Yolanda’.
The national government did not appeal for help from the international community mostly because the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) believe that foreign aid is not yet needed at this point because ample funds are available for distribution to the affected areas.
NDRRMC spokesperson Romina Marasigan on Dateline said: “So far the local government units and national government still have enough relief supplies to be given to our communities.”
“We will be doing assessment first so we will know exactly what type of aid we will be requesting from foreign counterparts.”
In a Facebook post, DSWD Secretary Judy Taguiwalo said there was no need for the Philippines to seek foreign aid. The new administration is transparent and people should trust that the funds will go straight to where it is needed.
Secretary Taguiwalo also said that its time for Filipinos to stand in our own feet instead of depending on the help extended by foreign governments.
