An oarfish are large, greatly elongated, pelagic lampriform fish belonging to the small family Regalecidae reaching a length of 56 feet (17 meters).

It's not well known, but giant oarfish are thought to frequent depths around 3,300 feet (1,000 meter). They can weigh up to 600 pounds (270 kilograms).
In Agusan del Norte, a 10-feet long dead oarfish was captured by fishermen. The oarfish was caught two days before the destructive earthquake that hit the province. It was a tragic incident when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit Surigao del Norte leaving damages and even deaths.

According to experts, it was a rare incident when such deep sea creature ended up in shallow water that it could have predicted the earthquake.
According to Rachel Grant, a lecturer in animal biology: “It’s theoretically possible because when an earthquake occurs there can be a build-up of pressure in the rocks which can lead to electrostatic charges that cause electrically charged ions to be released into the water.”

In Japan, the same incident happened when dozens of oarfish appeared which was followed by eathquakes in Haiti and Chile.

The sightings and its relation to earthquakes is not yet confirmed and stille requires further studies. But there are some who still believe that the creatures give signs of upcoming disasters.
