Fitness Coach Faces Backlash for 'Bakla' Homophobic Caption in Viral Workout Video

A Filipino fitness coach sparked controversy online after sharing a TikTok video featuring homophobic remarks in its caption.

In the video, which has since been reposted on various platforms, Edison Vargas is seen lifting weights while text overlays flash on the screen. The caption reads, “Dati nagpepre-workout pa ako para mabuhat ko 'yung last rep,” followed by, “Ngayon, kailangan ko lang pala isipin… Bakla ako 'pag hindi ko nabuhat 'to!”

Social media personality Bretman Rock was among those who reacted to the video, humorously critiquing Vargas's lifting form. "Lmfao, girl, at least put your elbows closer together," Rock commented, followed by, "All that for such a lightweight sis."

Vargas reportedly disabled comments on his post, and his TikTok account (@coachedison) is no longer accessible at the time of writing.

While some users shrugged off Vargas's post, others criticized it for its homophobic nature. Responding to the backlash, Vargas clarified that he didn't intend to offend anyone and expressed surprise at the negative reception, citing the absence of criticism on similar content he emulated.

In a now-deleted video statement, Vargas explained that he borrowed the phrase from other TikTok creators and didn't anticipate the backlash.

Netizens commended Bretman Rock for his swift response, praising his refusal to tolerate such behavior and highlighting a previous video where he lifted heavier weights while wearing a skirt, showcasing inclusivity and breaking stereotypes.
