Woman Arrested for Attempting to Obtain Loan Using Deceased Uncle's Identity at Brazilian Bank

A woman in Brazil was apprehended after attempting to secure a loan in her deceased uncle's name, bringing his body in a wheelchair to a local bank. Érika de Souza Vieira Nunes, 42, was arrested in Bangu, a district in western Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday, as reported by the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police.

The woman, identified as Erika Vieira Nunes, purported that the man in the wheelchair, Paulo Roberto Braga, 68, was her uncle and insisted he wished to sign documents for a loan totaling $3,250.

Fábio Souza, the police chief at The 34th Police Station, indicated that the victim had likely passed away at least two hours before the incident, according to reports from Brazilian news outlets G1 and CNN Brazil.

Security camera footage captured Erika Vieira Nunes pushing the deceased man into the bank. She attempted to make him sign for the loan, but his hand remained unresponsive. In the video, she can be heard urging him to sign and expressing concern about his silence, even suggesting she sign on his behalf.

Bank personnel grew suspicious as the man's head repeatedly fell backward when Erika Vieira Nunes ceased to support it. Consequently, they contacted the authorities, leading to her immediate arrest on charges of fraud. The deceased man was subsequently transported to the morgue.

Although her attorney claimed that the man had died at the bank, forensic analysis by the police determined that he had expired earlier while lying down.
