Renowned Comic Strip Creator and Director Carlo J. Caparas Passes Away at 80


Carlo J. Caparas, a celebrated Filipino comic strip creator and writer-director, has passed away at the age of 80. The sad news was confirmed by his daughter, Peach Caparas, through a heartfelt Facebook post.

"Salamat Direk Carlo J. sa mga dibuho at istorya. Mga istoryang nabuo sa bawat tipa ng iyong makinilya," Peach wrote in an ode to her father. She added, "Dad, you will forever be loved, cherished, and honored…by all of us."

Peach also shared that the wake for Caparas will commence on Monday, from noon until midnight, at the Haven Memorial Chapels and Crematorium in Taguig City.

Carlo J. Caparas is best known for his creation of iconic Filipino superheroes and characters through his comic strips, including Panday, Totoy Bato, Bakekang, Gagambino, and Elias Paniki. His impact on Filipino pop culture extended beyond comics, as he also directed notable films such as "The Vizconde Massacre" (1993), starring Kris Aquino.

In 2009, Caparas was honored as a National Artist for Visual Arts and Film, although this recognition was later invalidated by the Supreme Court in 2013. Despite this, his legacy in the Filipino arts and entertainment industry remains indelible.

The cause of Caparas' death has not been disclosed. His passing marks the end of an era for many fans and admirers who grew up with his stories and characters. Carlo's contributions to Filipino culture continue to be celebrated and remembered by his family, friends, and countless fans.
