The Filipino athletes who participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics returned to the Philippines on the evening of August 13, 2024, and were warmly welcomed by their families at Villamor Airbase. However, many noticed the absence of the family of two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo at the event. This left many wondering why his family, especially his grandfather, was not present to greet him.

Carlos Yulo’s grandfather, Rodrigo Frisco, who played a significant role in his early training, provided an explanation. In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Rodrigo shared that the family was ready to welcome Carlos, but they were informed that only the President and select members of the media were allowed to be at the airbase.
"Dapat nga sana masaya kaso nadismaya ako. Hindi kami pinayagang pumunta doon. Ang susundo lang daw, si President saka mga piling-piling media."
(I was supposed to be happy, but I was disappointed. We were told not to go there. Only the President and selected media were allowed,” the 74-year-old Rodrigo said.
"Kaya imbes na masaya sana kaming lahat, nadismaya kami dahil naka-ready na kami sa pagsalubong, e. Naka-ready na kami,"
(We were ready to welcome him, but we were dismayed.)
When asked who informed them not to attend, Rodrigo said, "Nag-text daw sa papa niya na huwag na daw kaming sumama sa pagsalubong. Hindi ko rin alam kung sino, e. Pero si Caloy ata, e."
(They texted his father, telling us not to join the welcome party. I don’t know who exactly, but I think it was Caloy [Carlos].)
Despite this disappointment, Rodrigo expressed his excitement for the upcoming grand homecoming parade for Carlos and the Philippine Olympic team, which is set to take place on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. Rodrigo shared that he and the rest of the family will be waiting in front of the Ospital ng Maynila to catch a glimpse of his grandson during the parade.
“I'm really excited because we haven’t seen him in a long time. Our friends have already prepared banners and food for the celebration,” Rodrigo added.
While the family missed the airport welcome, they are eagerly anticipating seeing Carlos during the parade and celebrating his historic achievements together.
