A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth.

Astronomers say that the biggest supermoon in 70 years is expected to appear on November 14.
A spectacular supermoon will occur, where the Moon will be the closest to Earth it’s been since January 1948. This event is even more significant because the Moon will appear up to 14% larger, and 30% brighter, than the typical full moon we are used to viewing. The Moon won’t be this close to the Earth again until November 25th, 2034.
The coincidence will take place three times in 2016 -- October 16, November 14 and December 14.
But the November supermoon is special because it will be "the closest full moon to date in the 21st century", according to NASA.

It will become full just two hours after its closest approach to Earth, arguably making it an "extra-super Moon."
The technical name is the perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system. The word syzygy describes when the Earth, Sun and Moon orbits Earth, while perigee is the point on the Moon's orbit nearest to Earth.
