Republican standard bearer Donald Trump is now the 45th President of the United States. He defied expectations and has secured 276 electoral votes, beating the more experienced Democratic rival and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who had 218 electoral votes.
But did you know that 16 years ago, "The Simpsons" had predicted that Trump would become US president? In an episode aired in 2000, Bart Simpson was shown a vision of his future, where his sister, Lisa Simpson, is the country's first "straight female president."
According to Lisa: "As you know, we've inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump." One of her staff then tells her that the country is broke following Trump's term.
The uncanny prediction occurred in Bart To The Future, an episode revealing how the lives of its central characters could turn out.
It later referenced his real-life run for the presidency again last year in a short clip called Trumptastic Voyage - though by this stage his candidacy was more commonly expected.
Matt Groening, the creator of the show told The Guardian: "We predicted that he would be president back in 2000 – but [Trump] was of course the most absurd placeholder joke name that we could think of at the time, and that’s still true. It’s beyond satire."
Meanwhile, Dan Greaney, a long-time writer of the show said it was a "warning to America."
According to him: "That just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane."
