A newborn baby, aged 10-days old had died after being bitten by rats in a hospital in India. Shocking pictures emerged of the baby at the Guntur Government Hospital Andhra Pradesh for treatment of a urinary tract infection.
Although the operation was successful, rats allegedly bit him while he was recovering at the hospital’s intensive care unit.
According to Lakshmi Chavali, the baby's mother, she immediately informed the hospital staff after noticing the horrific bites to the newborn baby but the staff just ignored her warning.
Rats had nibbled them [the child’s fingers] off.”
"My son was not killed by the rats but by doctors and staff at GGH. We suspected the danger a week ago. They were not bothered as they did not take us seriously."
Naga Chavali, the newborn's dad confirmed that his son died because of rat bites.
Minister for Health Kamineni Srinivas said the government has terminated the contract with the sanitation contractor and ordered an inquiry into the incident, demanding reports from the police within a week.
Mr Srinivas added the government would not tolerate any negligence.
Three health officials have been suspended over the incident.
