A heated altercation unfolded in Tobias Fornier, Antique, as Mayor Ernesto Tajanlangit III and Vice Mayor Jose Maria "Jojo" Fornier engaged in a physical confrontation regarding the distribution of food packs for residents affected by the El Niño phenomenon.
The incident, captured in videos circulating on social media, showcased the tense exchange between the two officials at a municipal warehouse where the food packs were stored. The disagreement escalated into a physical altercation, leaving both officials injured.
According to reports from the Tobias Fornier police, Vice Mayor Fornier accused Mayor Tajanlangit of initiating the confrontation by raising his voice and punching him in the face. In retaliation, Fornier delivered a punch of his own, although it had minimal impact.
The dispute stemmed from differing opinions on who should oversee the distribution of food packs sourced from the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO). Vice Mayor Fornier claimed to have requested the aid directly from Antique Governor Rhodora Cadiao, while Mayor Tajanlangit asserted that distribution should be handled by the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office due to the town's state of calamity declaration.
Governor Cadiao confirmed that Vice Mayor Fornier had indeed requested the aid from her office, but Mayor Tajanlangit intercepted the delivery, prompting Fornier to intervene.
In the aftermath of the altercation, both officials expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging its embarrassing nature and the need for reconciliation.
The disputed food packs have since been returned to the PSWDO, marking the resolution of the contentious issue surrounding their distribution.
The clash underscores the challenges faced by local officials in managing relief efforts during times of crisis, highlighting the importance of effective coordination and cooperation in addressing the needs of affected communities.
