Lawmakers File Bills To Enact The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA)

Dr. Rogel Mari Sese, a Filipino astrophysicist had announced the filing of two bills in the Senate and Lower House to enact the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA).

Dr. Sese wrote on his Facebook account:"All the work that we have done in the past few years for the development of a national space program amounts to these two documents... House Bill 3637 and Senate Bill 1211 which both aim to legislate a Philippine Space Development and Utilization  Policy and create a  Philippine Space Agency."

A space program can help to tackle some of the most urgent problems. For example, our efforts in disaster risk reduction and management will greatly benefit from a space program. Having our own satellite will make it easier for us to take high-resolution images; these images, in turn, can help us plan for and manage the effects of natural disasters.  Imagine the number of lives that can be saved.

Having our own space program will let us benefit more from the programs of our neighbors. Studies done in other countries show that for every space program job created, nearly a dozen support jobs emerge."

Space science and technology can greatly contribute to our development as a nation. Let us hope that legislators would realize its importance and pass the bill soon.
