President Duterte and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had first met during the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Laos in September.
On Wednesday, President Duterte had nothing but kind words for Japan as he and the prime minister issued a joint statement.
In his statement, President Duterte described Japan as Philippines' "special friend, most closer than a brother."
In a photo shared on Facebook by Secretary Bong Go, Special Assistant to the President, Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was seen beside President Duterte posing for a photo, doing Duterte's trademark fist gesture along with Filipino and Japanese officials.

President Duterte thanked Japan for its intention to provide high-speed boats and other equipment to enhance the Philippines' anti-terrorism capabilities and the transfer of a TC-90s training aircraft.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abe accepted President Duterte's offer to visit the Philippines at a convenient time.
