Mayor Rolando Espinosa of Albuera, Leyte was killed inside his jail cell at the Baybay City Provincial Jail on early morning on Saturday, November 5 along with inmate Raul Yap. This was confirmed by Albuera PNP Chief Jovie Espenido.
In an interview with radio DZMM, Espenido said the former mayor was killed while Mayor Espinosa was being served a search warrant by CIDG Region 8. The details on shooting were still sketchy.
"It was a warrant application. It was purely CIDG. Walang coordination with PNP Region 8,"
The CIDG was also supposed to be serving a warrant on a certain Raul Yap for charges related to Republic Act No. 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.
Mayor Espinosa was arrested in October 5 for illegal drug possession and weapon charges. He was among the politicians linked by President Duterte to the illegal drug trade.
His son Kerwin, an alleged drug lord was arrested in Abu Dhabi last month. He was now in the custody of INTERPOL and in the process of being deported.
