Michael “Kikil” Alcoseba, 23, was supposed to walk up the stage and accept his award after graduating cum laude at Lapu Lapu City College on Tuesday. Instead, it was his mother and sister who brought his framed photo to the graduation rites and accepted his award on his behalf.
Kikil died of pneumonia on May 11, just days before the commencement exercises. He had completed a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ahong Chan captured the emotional moment on video, sharing that almost all those present were in tears and gave a standing ovation as Kikil’s mother and sister accepted the award.
“Nanhimbawot ang akong balhibo. Sayo intawon siya gikuha sa Ginoo (I had goosebumps. He was taken by the Lord too early),” wrote Chan.

In a heartfelt post, Alcoseba’s sister, Juliet Hiyas, expressed the profound sadness and pride felt by their family. She shared the difficulty of attending the graduation ceremony without Kikil.
“Sakit kaayo. Niapil si mama sa processional nga picture nimo iyang dala (It was very painful. Our mother joined the processional with your picture),” Hiyas said.
Kikil was not just a dedicated student but also a member of the Lapu-Lapu City Performing Arts as a dancer and a working student who supported himself through school.
“Proud kaayo mi sa among manghud (We are so proud of our little brother),” Hiyas added.

The event saw the presence of Congresswoman Cindi King-Chan and Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan, who extended their deepest sympathies to the family.
“Medyo na emotional sad gyud ganina sa dihang gitawag na ang pangalan ni Michael Alcoseba o mas nailhan natong ‘Kikil,’ nga wala na intawn nakaabot sa iyang graduation day kay naa naman siya sa kiliran sa atong Labawng Makagagahum,” Chan said in a social media post.
Despite the tragic loss, Kikil's legacy of hard work and perseverance was celebrated by his family, friends, and community during the graduation ceremony.
