Silver Medalist Hidilyn Diaz Expressed Her Deep Gratitude To God After Historic Finish In Rio Olympic Games


Hidilyn Diaz, a Filipino weightlifter had placed second in the women's 53-kg division of weightlifting in Brazil on Monday morning after registering 88kg in snatch and 112 kg in clean and jerk, for a total of 200 kg. She gave the Philippines its first silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Diaz is one of the 13 Philippine athletes competing in 8 sports in the Summer Games. Her silver win is the Philippines' first medal since 1996 when boxer Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco bagged the silver in the Atlanta Olympic Games. 


Before the awarding ceremony, Diaz shared a video on Facebook where she expressed her deep gratitude to God for the blessing. She is heard saying, "Lord, thank you," numerous times in the over-a-minute video.


"Thank you, Lord. Kakaiba ka, Lord God. Kakaiba ka," Diaz said, the first Filipino Olympian to win a medal in a span of two decades.

 Other events where the Philippines is competing are athletics, boxing, golf, judo, swimming, table tennis and taekwondo.
