Two athletes, New Zealand athlete Nikki Hamblin and US runner Abbey D'Agostino have provided one of the most inspirational moments of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games when they tripped over each other in the women's 5,000 meter run -- then helped one another to carry on.
Hamblin suddenly fell face forward and wasn't able to get back up because of the severe pain she was experiencing. D'Agostino was following closely behind and stumbled over her and fell as well.
D’Agostino noticed Hamblin was down and in pain. Instead of continuing to run for the race, D’Agostino stopped running and turned to Hamblin, reaching for her with two open arms—the race and Olympic glory, forgotten.
On my shoulder, like ‘get up, get up, we have to finish this!’ I’m so grateful for Abbey for doing that for me. That girl is the Olympic spirit right there."
The two competitors finished the race last, and embraced closely before D’Agostino was taken away in a wheelchair for treatment.
People on social media were quick to express their admiration of Hamblin's actions. The two athletes may have finished last, but they surely won the hearts of many.
