Could This 13-Year-Old Girl Become The Next Filipino Saint And The Youngest In History?

The journey toward sainthood for 13-year-old Filipina Niña Ruiz Abad commenced on April 7, as the diocesan phase of her cause for canonization was officially initiated at the Cathedral of St. William the Hermit in Laoag City, Philippines. This significant event coincided with Divine Mercy Sunday, marking the first step in a process that could potentially make Ruiz Abad one of the youngest saints in history.

Under the guidance of Bishop Renato Mayugba of Laoag City, the tribunal convened to hear witnesses testify to the life and holiness of the Servant of God. Described as "an inspiration of piety, mercy, evangelization, and fortitude to others," Ruiz Abad's life story resonated deeply with those present.

The session commenced with a video reenactment of Ruiz Abad's life, offering attendees a glimpse into her unwavering devotion to God from a tender age. Known for her deep piety and love for the Blessed Sacrament, she was depicted as a child always immersed in prayer, distributing religious items to her peers and remaining steadfast in her faith even in the face of illness.

Father Dennis Ruíz, postulator of the cause, highlighted Ruiz Abad's example, particularly for today's youth, akin to Blessed Carlo Acutis. He emphasized the importance of providing positive role models amidst the distractions of modern life, asserting that Ruiz Abad's character and unwavering faith could serve as a guiding light for the younger generation.

The event also featured the unveiling of the official portrait of the Servant of God by Filipino painter Ariel Caratao, as well as musical performances by the Divine Mercy Children's Choir.

Niña's family, along with members of the God First Association and a multitude of clergy and laity, gathered to honor her memory and celebrate the beginning of her journey toward sainthood. Following the session, attendees visited Ruiz Abad's tomb in the Church of St. Monica, Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, paying homage to her legacy.

Ruiz Abad's cause for beatification and canonization reflects the Catholic Church's ongoing commitment to recognizing modern-day saints who exemplify faith in contemporary society. As Bishop Mayugba aptly remarked, "May her life, though short, inspire all of us to put God first in our lives," encapsulating the enduring impact of Ruiz Abad's devoutness and devotion.
