Benguet-based fighter Eduard Folayang defeated Japan's Shinya Aoki and winning the ONE Championship lightweight title at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday, November 11.
Things got off to a bad start for Folayang who was taken down in the opening round. In the second round, Folayang stared to take more risks and missed with a head kick followed by a spinning backfist.
But in the third round, Folayang caught Aoki with a well-timed knee to the head that dropped Aoki to his knees. He pinned the Japanese grappler to the cage before unloading a series of heavy shots on Aoki.
After the referee Yuji Shimada saw that Aoki could no longer defend himself, he immediately stepped in to halt the bout in the third round.
It was a huge victory for Folayang who came as an underdog against the potential MMA hall of famer.
“I’d like to thank the master of masters and lord of lords, Jesus Christ thank you so much!” said an emotional Folayang.
He dedicated the win to his Team Lakay coaches and training partners and wrapped the belt around the waist of the camp’s founder, Mark Sangiao. His record improves to 17-5, while Aoki drops to 39-7-0-1 after suffering his first defeat since 2012, when Eddie Alvarez stopped him in a rematch.
