Colombia plane, La Mia Flight 2933 crashed into mountainous area just 30km from its final destination of Medellin airport in Colombia.

Its pilot said: "The plane is in total electric failure and without fuel," according to twosources familiar with the investigation who heard audio recordings of conversations between the flight crew and air traffic control.

The plane lost contact with the ground controllers after the pilot reported an electrical fault, killing at least 71 people, including Chapecoense soccer squad on its way to the Copa Sudamericana finals. The team was travelling to Colombia to face Atletico Nacional in the first leg of the finals.

Three players, two crew members and one journalist survived. Among the dead were 21 journalists on board, six of them from the Fox Sports Brazil channel and others from the Globo network.

Director of the Colombia Civil Aviation Authority, Alfredo Bocanegra said even though a preliminary investigation pointed to an electrical problem, the possibility the plane ran out of fuel has not been ruled out. The Colombian Civil Aviation Authority declined to comment further on technical details.
