German Tourist Charged P1,000 For A Tricycle Ride In Binondo

A viral video depicting an alleged incident of overcharging involving a tricycle driver and an American tourist has sparked controversy online. However, the tricycle driver claims that the video does not accurately portray the entirety of their fare negotiation.

In the video, initially shared by the American tourist under the username Saygin Lost, it appears that the driver demanded a fare of P1,000, which was later negotiated down to P250 after the tourist complained about the exorbitant price. However, the driver contends that the video was edited and does not reflect the full context of their agreement.

According to the driver, they initially agreed on a fare of P1,000 when the tourist was picked up at Soler Street in Binondo, Manila. Recognizing that the amount was too high, the driver lowered it to P500. Eventually, they settled on a fare of P250, and the tourist was taken to his destination at Plaza Ruiz.

The driver expressed dismay over the negative impact the viral video has had on him and his family. He maintains that while he was aware the tourist was filming, he did not realize that the fare negotiation would be featured in content about scams.

Local barangay chairpersons in Binondo confirmed that no reports were filed regarding the incident, assuring that such occurrences are isolated and that they are vigilant in monitoring them to maintain the safety and integrity of the area.

GMA Integrated News has reached out to Saygin Lost. He uploaded the uncut videos showing what really happened. Saygin Lost was told that the fare would cost him P250 even before boarding the vehicle at Soler Street. After arriving at his destination, the tricycle driver was charging the tourist P1,500. The German haggled for a lower fare until they reached the initial amount of 250.
