Cardiologist and health advocate Dr. Willie Ong, widely known as "Doc Willie," has revealed that he is battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Ong, who ran for vice president in the 2022 elections, shared the news on his social media platforms, stating that he is currently undergoing chemotherapy for a large sarcoma found in his abdomen. He also mentioned that he believes stress played a significant role in the development of his condition.
Ong disclosed that the tumor, measuring 16 x 13 x 12 centimeters, was located behind his heart and in front of his spine. In a video recorded from his hospital room on August 29, which was only released recently due to his “serious and complicated journey through chemotherapy,” Ong detailed his diagnosis and treatment.
"Ang bukol na ito, malaking malaki daw. Isa sa pinakamalaki na nakita nila," Ong said in his YouTube post. The Mayo Clinic defines sarcoma as a broad group of cancers that begin in bones or soft tissues.
Ong recounted that his symptoms began in April 2023 when he experienced fatigue, difficulty breathing, and trouble swallowing during medical missions. He initially dismissed these signs as part of aging. However, in October, he developed severe back pain that radiated to the upper part of his spine, affecting his sleep. By August, the pain had become "the worst of his life," prompting him to seek medical attention, which led to the diagnosis of a "very rare, aggressive, very big" sarcoma.
In a more personal reflection, Ong attributed his cancer to the immense stress he experienced, particularly during his campaign and medical missions. "Nakuha ko ito sa stress," Ong said, suggesting that the demanding nature of his work and the pressures of the 2022 elections may have contributed to the onset of his illness.
Despite the serious health challenge, Ong remains positive.
"Malungkot ako? Hindi. Suwerte nga ako may asawa ako nagbabantay. Suwerte ako may [mga] anak ako... binabantayan ako. I'm so blessed," he shared. Ong also reflected on how the diagnosis strengthened his bond with his children, saying, "Negative, may bukol. Pero positive, naging close sa akin 'yung dalawang anak ko. Pamilya ko naging close."
Doc Willie has garnered a large following on social media, regularly providing health and wellness tips to his 9.7 million YouTube subscribers and 17 million Facebook followers.
In 2022, he ran as the vice-presidential candidate alongside former Manila Mayor Isko Moreno under the Aksyon Demokratiko party. Ong has also served as a consultant to the Department of Health from 2010 to 2014. He earned his medical degree from De La Salle University College of Medicine in 1992 and his Master in Public Health degree from the University of the Philippines Manila in 2002.
